Here's The Buzz From Our Hive
March 2-6, 2020
After a few exciting field trips last week, we are back to our daily classroom routine this week! The students enjoyed partnering up and buddy reading with a classmate during literacy centers on Monday. (see pictures above)
Our class will be making leprechaun traps next week in class. This STEM activity will require clean recyclables. We will need cereal boxes, oatmeal canisters, toilet paper rolls, egg cartons, cupcake liners, etc… (nothing too big as they will be building on a 12x18 platform. Please send in your recyclables no later than Thursday, March 12th. Thank you!
Please save the date, Friday, April 3rd at 10:30, for our annual Hat Parade! More info will be coming home about this event in your child’s red folder next week, but we certainly wanted to make sure that you would be present for this spectacular performance by our kindergarten students.
Here is a peek at our week:
Literacy Centers
- Write the Room- Veterinarian
- Word Work 1- Sight Word Practice
- Word Work 2- Explode the Code (phonics skills)

Math Centers
- Geoboards- The students choose a geoboard shape card to copy onto a geoboard.
- Shapes and Spinners Graphing- The students spin a shape spinner and draw the indicated shape on a graph, continuing until three columns of the graph is filled. The students will compare the amounts in the columns.
- Pattern Block Designs- The students choose a pattern block design mat to copy with pattern blocks. They also record the number of each shape used in their design.
- Hungry Caterpillars- Partners take turns spinning a shape spinner, finding the matching pattern block, and placing it on the caterpillar. The first one to fill his caterpillar exactly is the winner.
- Roll, Add and Cover- The students roll two dice and add the numbers together and cover the sum with a pattern block. They continue rolling and covering until their picture is complete. Then they record the number of shapes used in their design.
- Circles and Squares Race to 20- In pairs, students take turns rolling a die numbered 0-5 and coloring in the number of circles or spares on the game board. The first student to land exactly on 20 wins the game.
Message from Middle School-
Community Connections is gearing up for a school-wide service drive to benefit service-learning initiatives in the middle school. To make participating in this drive as easy as possible, we are asking for contributions to specifically help an organization that the middle school is partnering with for a service learning project. CC students will have the opportunity to visit during morning meeting and chapel to tell lower school students more about these organizations and how they help people in our community. We are asking Marcia Hall (Pre-K and K) to collect items for The Diaper Bank of NC. They take open packages and single diapers, so we thought there may be some hiding around the homes of our littlest students. We are asking Lower School, grades 1-4, to collect toothbrushes, toothpaste, and floss for Alliance Medical Ministries. We thought these easy access items for this age group. When we return from break, a bin at the end of each hallway to collect items throughout the drive. We appreciate any support your students can offer during our service drive. Please send in all donations by March 11th.
